to put into orbit is the same technology you use to develop long-range ballistic missiles, the u.s. condemned this act. they are worried about the marriage of north korea's nuclear weapons with this long-range missile technology. this is the type of missile that if it was successful, as it appears to be, could reach parts of the united states, alaska, u.s. military bases in hawaii. but a u.s. efficiently i spoke with who used to work on north north korea for the defense department told me, there are still areas in which north korea has not made it as far as they would need to in terms of getting an accurate rocket, in terms of getting heat shielding, and in terms of making a nuclear war head signal enough to fit on the end of that missile. but the real danger is what it may do with this technology in terms of giving it over to other nations. >> chris lawrence, thank you. >>> john berman with other stories making news. >>> the united states officially recognizing syria's opposition coalition as the representative of the syrian people. it's just a show of support. it is does not mean

deficiencies. u.s. ambassador to libya, christopher stevens and three other americans were killed in that attack. i'm joined by elise labott. what's the latest? >> reporter: well, the latest is this morning secretary clinton's deputies will be testifying, john. deputy secretary tom nides and william burns. secretary clinton is still suffering from a concussion. what i think is really interesting this morning is who's going to be chairing the morning session with the senate foreign relations committee. that's the chairman, john kerry, who is tapped to be the next secretary of state. now, of course there's a lot of questions in this panel report about the leadership at the state department, but there's also a lot of criticism of congress for not supporting resources for the state department security. let's take a listen to the fine balance that john kerry is trying to walk between trying to be tough on the state department, but also trying to show a little support. >> the report specifically calls on resources. there's a need to put about $2.5 billion a year over a number of years i

after the u.s. senate acts. we're not sure what the senate will do, as you say, we're expecting that smaller deal. what exactly will they vote on? perhaps something that will erase tax hikes for most but not all americans. there could be some money in there for unemployment benefits. they're cobbling all of that together today. all eyes again on the senate, as you say. an let's look at what's going to happen today. 10:00 a.m., that's when the senate comes into session, 10:00 a.m. 11:30 is when president obama returns from hawaii. so we expect many conversations after the president returns. then we have those five days, ali, as you say, until we go over the fiscal cliff. ali, one other number, six days until the markets open after the fiscal cliff and i'll throw a second number, one week until the new congress begins, so they are hard up against some big deadlines. >> the market implication is important because markets have done very, very well this year, lisa, and there's some suggestion if congress doesn't get it together before the new year, markets may force them to do so. we

by international powers. the u.s. state department issued a state very much condemning the government of syria for what's going o.here's some of what they had to say in that statement. brutal attacks such as these show that this regime has no future in syria. those that commit atrocities will be held accountable. the united states calls on all parties to assist the exaccuse of the war against the syrian people. it was just a day later, yesterday, we heard reports of another air raid targeting another bakery in homs province. according to opposition activists dozens of people were standing in this line outside this bakery, including women and children and 15 people were killed in this attack and once again you see a lot of amateur videos posted online showing how the shock and grief initially after that attack really started turning into rage. people addressing the cameras saying why isn't the world helping us. why aren't arab leaders helping us while bashar al assad is massacring their people. religiony horrific stuff and there's fear that this will keep going on for the next days, weeks and m
